SUN AND STARS

Sun from What's In The Names Of Stars And Constellations, by Peter Limburg, Coward McCann & Geoghegan 1976, illustrations by me

The Sun has returned to Philadelphia yesterday, reminding me
of illustrating Peter Limburg's book, WHAT'S IN THE NAMES
OF STARS AND CONSTELLATIONS. The publisher wanted
humorous art for each chapter. This was my take on the food
chain....as in the Sun helps the grain grow which feeds the
cattle....etc. As I worked on this book, the editor changed
5 times (5 editors, not 5 outfit changes).
The day I delivered the finished art, I took the elevator to the
11th floor, where the offices and last editor had been before.
The door opened and fortunately, I looked before I stepped out.
Unbeknownst to me, renovations were in progress and the 11th
floor had been removed. It wasn't there at all. I was looking
down at the 10th floor where I might have landed if I was
hurrying. Talk about seeing stars...........

  1. I just discovered your blog, and love what you do. Oh that I were as talented as you. I am new to blogging and just started my site a few months back. Come on over and visit. My dream was always to be a children's book illustrator, I am now a retired elementary art teacher. Maybe the book thing will still happen. Your work is amazing.

    Glad you like it.
I've been telling your cat story to those who are highly amused.

    Good to hear from you.

  4. This illustration really shows the breadth of your talent. So different from your other art.

Regarding the elevator: Yikes! I'm glad you weren't carrying a heap of packages.
