Secret Life Of A Groundhog

My illustration from QUESTIONS, by Lee Bennett Hopkins, HarperCollins
February 2, Groundhog Day.
This year he saw his shadow.
Six more weeks of winter.
Ever wonder what a Groundhog does
for fun the rest of the year?
Chucks wood.
Yeah, as in "How much wood would
a Woodchuck chuck.......
How come?
Groundhogs and Woodchucks are the
same animal. :~)

How Time Flies

Jane Flory in my college days
48 years ago this month since I walked into
Jane Flory's Evening Division office as her
new student helper.
Part of my student aid package.
Best boss I ever had.
Friend, teacher, mentor followed.
Can't say in what order, evolving and growing
with time.
Some time before Jane revealed her other profession.
Author and Illustrator of over 50 children's books.

An alumna of the College.
As well as raising three lovely, talented
and mischievous daughters.

Just a few of Jane Flory's wonderful books
Jane was the first to believe I could write as well as illustrate.
Trusted me to illustrate her Ranshackle Roost (HMCo).
Taught me everything she knew about "the ropes"
of writing, book illustrating and publishing and introduced
me to Houghton Mifflin Co., her publisher.
We did 4 books together.

Ramshackle Roost, We'll Have A Friend For Lunch, The
Unexpected Grandchildren and The Bear On The Doorstep
(all HMCo).
Hard work, much laughter, interesting expeditions.
She listened, sympathized, advised, cheered
and laughed with every "war story" from books
that came after.
We shared a love of history, doll houses, handcrafts
and travel. Unabashed Anglophiles.
Remembered anecdotes from shared adventures
always make me laugh.
And I miss her.

Jane Flory at the Landis Valley Museum in Lancaster, PA.
on a research trip for my book, The Three Brothers, Whitebird/Putnam
One of our memorable"expeditions" over the years.

Brotherly Love

Blogging to you from high above the city of
brotherly love.
Celebrating dear Freddie's 9th birthday!!
Don't know for sure the exact date, but
somewhere within the last week of January
and first week of February.
Tizzy was 3 when Fred arrived and not at all
happy to share his comfortable life.
Fred did little to win him over.
Slept in his beds.
Played with his toys.
Chasing the big guy around and wanting
to play when Tizzy wanted to sleep.
Nothing irritated Tizzy more than the
baby cat licking his face.

It still does.

Its about who's the boss. Freddie never learns. Nano seconds after

this shot, a feline re-enactment of an Ali/Fraser fight. =^..^=

Spork Maestro

Recently, searched the Net for a combination fork
and spoon eating utensil.
Thought it might help my blind Mom eat more
comfortably.
Discovered the spork.
Familiar to kids and campers.
I wanted one that fit in with regular silverware.
Discovered the ETSY shop bosen / handcrafted
http://www.etsy.com/shop/Bosen

Mom's first Bosen made spork, photo ⓒ Bosen 2012, with permission

Bosen, the shop proprietor and craftspersonrecycles
old worthy teaspoons of "good quality and with character",
painstakingly searched for in thrift stores and garage sales.
Then careful grinding, sanding and filing transforms them into
these useful and unique utensils. Often completing the
transformation by engraving a word like "NOURISH" or
"Eat" on the stem.
Bosen credits trying to eat penne pasta at lunch with
a rounded spoon. Studying bronze casting at a foundry at
the time encouraged the thought of creating tines on the front
edge of the spoon.
And it works magnificently!
My Mom started raving immediately!
Amusingly, she was eating a penne pasta dish
at the time.
I immediately sent for 2 more of Bosen's sporks for Mom.
Now I want some of my own.

These 2 Bosen sporks arrived yesterday, photos ⓒ Bosen 2012, with permission

When not "sporkifying" spoons, Bosen restores older steel
bicycles and finds them new owners in the small town in
on the North shore of Monterey Bay in Central California
where Bosen lives.
Bosen writes, "I am passionate about sustainable human
powered transportation which means keeping every last
bicycle out of landfills and scrap piles. I make a life of
turning beat up, neglected old bicycles into smooth running,
useful machines that will serve their owners for decades to come.

I suggest you bring along your trusty unique Bosen spork
for when you stop for lunch and/or dinner. Enjoy your meal.
Thanking its enigmatic, conscientious creator/ recycler.

2012 So Far

 ⓒCarolyn Croll 2012/ Silkworm with
Mulberry (after Maria Sibylla Merian)
Six days in.
So far:

Discovered my lovely
blood-red Bokara, scored
on sale when Wanamakers
went out of business years ago,
totaled by wool moths.

Imbibing massive amounts
of chicken soup, tea w/lemon
and honey. Gargling through
my annual head cold.

Received an email requesting
permission to use "part" of a
piece of my sample art from
the internetafter the requester
had lifted, altered and used
it twice
Permission denied.
Property of a client.

Another year begins........ ACHOO!

Hooray For Fran Manushkin!

Thanks to author Fran Manushkin.
A delightful introduction to Hanukkah customs
and family celebration of the Jewish Festival
of Lights for the very young.

Each night a new candle is added to
the Menorah.
The whole family prepares and dines on
golden latkes, plays dreidel, sings Hanukkah
songs and enjoys chocolate Hanukkah gelt (coins).

Watched by their playful tabby kitten.
Sharing Hanukkah fun and joy for 8 days and nights.
In remembrance of a miracle from 2nd century BC.
A small amount of holy oil in the Temple burned
for 8 days enabling the ancient Jews time to prepare
a new supply in order to rededicate their Temple.
My Art Director at Random House asked me
to set the celebrations in an early 20th century
city brownstone.
At that time most Jews living in eastern cities,
including some of my family, were poor hard-
working immigrants living in cramped tenements.
But that is a different story.
Simple Stickley style furniture remembered
from my Great Grandmother as well as another
Grandmother's Menorah and old family photos
helped inspire my illustrations.

TZ's First Snowfall

The inspiration for my 2011 holiday card came from
a picture I took of baby Tizzy's first reaction to
falling snow 11 and a half years ago.

(click image to see snow flakes) ⓒ carolyn croll 2011
It was early evening. Looking out the north window
at the falling flakes chirping his pure enchantment,
tail wagging.

MyPad

Red Cat, Carolyn Croll ⓒ 2011
One tiny step for cat art, one GIANT step
for me on my Ipad.

So proud of myself. Did this quickie sketch
of a red cat.

Marks the first image I made on my Ipad using the SketchPro app
AND then somehow managed to transfer it to my Mac without
quite knowing how I did it.

If I can figure that out, I intend to do it again.

Stay tuned.......

Dumb Phone

ⓒ 2011 Carolyn Croll

Any day now my ancient NOKIA basic
cell phone may conk out and I may be stuck
having to use a SMART phone.

Don't want a smart phone.

Don't need it to take pictures, play music, tell me
where I am, buy things online, play games, brew
coffee, make a sandwich and other amazing feats
they perform besides boring old sending and
receiving phone calls.

I'll accept taking VOICE messages and stashing
useful phone numbers.
The charge can last as long as possible.
The monthly fee can be as low as possible.
I need a cell phone to call for help, a cab, or to say
I'm on my way, or running late.
And to call my Mom when I'm out shopping
and see something she might like or if they're out of
what she wants. Otherwise I socialize in person,
by regular phone, email, and sometimes FaceBook.
And I LIKE it this way.

Do not assume I am technologically
challenged. I love my MAC and use it to do all
sorts of stuff on and off line and am always
learning more. I just don't need a pocket NASA/
entertainment system to make or receive infrequent
ordinary phone calls.

Tried to sign in to ATT's Mobile website a short while
ago to look for the dumbest phone they have.
They couldn't find my account. (No trouble finding my
account when there's a bill).

Dumb phone company.
Just wish they offered a dumb phone.

A Natural Master

bell-flower Frond, JoAnne Russo, photos Jeff Baird & Rachel Portesi, with permission

JoAnne Russo's striking large embellished
pods on their graceful textured branches
drew me in to her display at the 2011
Philadelphia Museum of Art Crafts Show.

Upon closer inspection her spellbinding naturalistic
forms become otherworldly in their scale textures
and colors. Organic in material, waxed
linen cord, Renewable Palm ivory (Tagua nut)
beads dyed. Looking even more closely, a zipper and/or
ordinary hook and eyes.

Her love of nature evident in every imaginative piece.
Surprises rewarding those who look a little closer.
JoAnne's enchanted work reflects the skills she has
acquired over 30 years as a master basket maker.

Uncommon Cents

Real change at the Philadelphia Museum of
Art Crafts Show.
Sculptor, Jeweler Stacey Lee Webber
is out to nickel and dime us in most
unusual ways.
Originally from Indiana, she now
lives and works here in Philadelphia,
PA.
First to catch my eye, copper Abe
Lincoln silhouette earrings.
photo: Stacey Webber / with permission

Made from vintage solid copper US pennies.
There are Washington and Roosevelt pieces
fashioned from antique silver American coins
as well.

Earrings, cufflinks, bracelets, pendant
necklaces, long coin chains and money
clips.

Some of her most unusual pieces, hand tools.
Hammer, mallet, hand saw, architect/builder's
plum, tape measure and full size ladder.
Three American flags made of pennies remind
me of the flags my Grandmother displayed
from her porch railing on the 4th of July.

All constructed with enormous care and craftsmanship
from old coins.
